Case study
Legacy ASP.NET to cloud migration case study
The client is a direct-response marketing company that builds and manages subscription-based financial protection programs for mid-market consumers. Name withheld pending client permission — the stack, the approach, and the numbers are real.
The situation
The client's customer acquisition platform ran on an on-premises Windows Server 2008 environment: IIS 7 hosting a proprietary ASP.NET application, on-premises Exchange handling email integration, and a SQL Server 2008 database approaching the end of its support lifecycle.
The infrastructure was increasingly costly to host and maintain. Deployments were manual, scalability was limited, and security exposure was growing quietly in the background. Shipping new features against the aging stack had become slow and risky — exactly the kind of drag that compounds until it can't be ignored.
Before and after
The stack, side by side.
| Layer | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Server | Windows Server 2008, on-premises | Netlify (managed cloud hosting) |
| Application | Proprietary ASP.NET application on IIS 7 | Modern JavaScript frontend + lightweight API |
| Database | SQL Server 2008, approaching end of support | PostgreSQL — data cleaned and validated during migration |
| Deployment | Manual, server-based | Automated pipeline with monitoring |
The approach
Rather than lifting the existing application onto another Windows server, the platform was rebuilt on modern architecture: a new customer-facing frontend on a modern JavaScript framework, a lightweight API to handle customer submissions, and a full data migration from SQL Server to PostgreSQL — records were cleaned and validated during the move rather than copied over as-is.
Core business workflows were recreated in the new application, then deployed to modern cloud hosting with automated deployment and monitoring in place of manual server updates. The cutover happened with minimal downtime: the business kept accepting new customer registrations throughout the transition.
The result
Aging on-premises infrastructure was replaced with cloud-hosted infrastructure that's more reliable and easier to secure. On-prem server maintenance was eliminated entirely, updates that used to require manual server work now ship through an automated pipeline, and the platform runs on current frameworks and managed services rather than software that had outlived its support window.
The result is a lower-complexity, lower-cost platform positioned to scale with the business rather than constrain it.
